As a 22-year-old student at NYU Shanghai majoring in Interactive Media Arts, digital literacy is central to both my academic and personal development. It’s not just about knowing how to use computers and social media—it’s about understanding how digital tools shape the way we think, create, and interact. With AI and data-driven technologies evolving rapidly, digital literacy has become an ongoing process of exploration and adaptation as I learn new tools and concepts.
The Role of Digital Tools in Creation, Collaboration, and Communication
Digital tools are at the heart of my creative process, enabling me to design, prototype, and communicate effectively. I use platforms like Figma and Miro for UI/UX design, Unity, Rhino8, and Maya for 3D modeling, and Adobe Animate for 2D animation. Recently, I began exploring DaVinci Resolve for film production, deepening my understanding of camera work and video editing.
Beyond my field, digital literacy plays a key role across disciplines. My peers in Creative Writing and Film rely on platforms like Medium and Substack for publishing, while Film students use Adobe Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve for editing. Throughout my studies, I’ve gained proficiency in tools that foster both creative work and interdisciplinary collaboration. Learning to use GitHub for version control has improved my understanding of collaborative workflows, and creating static websites has deepened my grasp of web development. These experiences have shown me how crucial structure and presentation are in online engagement.
Tools like Voyant and Posit Cloud have proven invaluable for analyzing large text corpora, revealing patterns that traditional close reading might miss. This semester, we explored the importance of responsible AI usage, privacy protections, and bias mitigation.
A related topic I examined was the role of microtasking in digital collaboration, particularly in Humanitarian OpenStreetMap. By breaking down large mapping tasks into smaller contributions, productivity increases, yet a disproportionate number of tasks often fall on highly active contributors. This reminded me of a past assignment where my partner and I divided tasks between Voyant Tools and Posit Cloud for Shakespearean analysis. Though initially appearing balanced, certain aspects required significantly more effort, leading to reflections on how digital collaboration structures influence participation and output.
What stood out to me was how difficult it is to quantify contributions. In microtasking, a few volunteers end up doing the majority of the work, shaping the final outcome. In my own project, while one of us worked more in certain areas, it balanced out because we chose tasks based on our strengths. However, this isn’t always the case. In our coursework, we explored static, dynamic, and interactive websites, which helped me understand how digital platforms function based on design and purpose. Tools like DOT (Document Object Technology) and corpus analysis tools have deepened my understanding of offline document processing and language analysis.
As I continue working with AI and other digital tools, I’ve been thinking more about their societal impact and ethical considerations.
